Wye Valley View - Local Attractions - Historical & Cultural

Historical & Cultural

There is a wealth of historical interest in the area. This being border country, there is a particular preponderance of castles: those listed below, not to mention also Raglan, Caldicot and others.

Goodrich Castle
Our closest castle out of the very many in this border region. The castle guards the river crossing on the old Roman road from Monmouth to Gloucester. Built by the Normans, further improved in the 13th century, remains survive the civil war.

White Castle
Skenfrith Castle
Grosmont Castle

The so called ‘Three Castles’ route, only ten minutes away. Great for a days touring, as all are in a tranquil rural setting. Skenfrith has a riverside location and large flat grassy area, with pub and tea room close by.

Tintern Abbey
Iconic ruins in flat valley basin with level walks possible along the river. Pubs/restaurants nearby.

Chepstow Castle
Huge castle to explore with dramatic clifftop setting overlooking river.

Gloucester Cathedral
Harry Potter enthusiasts will note Hogwarts corridors were filmed here!

Three Choirs Vineyards

We were really surprised by the amount of castles and other interesting places to visit nearby. Thank you for a great week.
